Vision

Drishti (the focused yet soft gaze of Yoga practices), is a vehicle for developing concentrated intention.
Patanjali’s fifth limb of Yoga (pratyahara) is concerned with withdrawal of the senses, and the sixth limb, dharana, relates to concentration. Both of these have relationships with drishti. However, I don’t think Patanjali had long hours looking at screens in mind when he recorded the Yoga Sutras!

Whenever something new appears in my practice I typically explore it for several months before sharing it with you. Last week I ‘attended’ a seminar which touched on ways to explore peripheral (ambient) vision in the context of calming the nervous system. I incorporated some of these into my practice and I right away want to share them with you because I’ve felt their effects so clearly.

Since many of us have additional screen time these days - utilizing exclusively focal (fovea) vision - I think these little yumyums might be of great help to us; our vision and our nervous systems too. We’ll explore drishti as well as long sight and peripheral vision in Tuesdays class….
